ORTHODOX  DOCTRINE !

In the years after Jesus’ Resurrection, apostles and missionaries travelled throughout the known world spreading the Gospel. Soon five major locations were established as centers for the faith: Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome, Alexandria and Constantinople. In the year 1054 the Roman church broke from this united Church, and five hundred years later Protestant churches began breaking away from Rome. But the original Church has remained united in the Apostolic Faith since the first century. THIS IS ORTHODOXY !

One of the tasks of the early Church was defining, and defending , orthodox theology against the battering waves of heresies. These heresies often appeared in disputes over the nature of Trinity, or how Jesus could be both God and Man. Church Councils were called to search the Scriptures and put into words the common faith, forming a bedrock of certainty that could stand for all ages. From this time, the Church has been called “Orthodox”, which means “right belief” or “right praise”. The Nicene Creed originated at the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325, and is the central Orthodox statement of faith,
a preeminent example of the work of the Councils. Built on the foundation of Christ and His Apostles, nothing has been added to our faith, and nothing can be added. It is complete.

ORTHODOX  WORSHIP !

Orthodox Churches still use forms of worship that were practiced in the first centuries. Our worship is based to a great extent on passages from Scripture. We sing most of the service, joining our voices in simple harmony to ancient melodies.

Our worship is focused on God, not on our own enjoyment, fulfilment, or fellowship. We come into the presence of God with awe, aware of our fallenness and His great mercy. We seek forgiveness and rejoice in the great gift of salvation so freely given. Orthodox worship is filled with repentance, gratitude, and unending praise.

We try, as best we can, to make our worship beautiful. The example of Scripture shows us that God’s design for tabernacle worship (Exodus 25,26) included gold, silver, precious stones, blue and purple cloth, embroidery, incense, bells, and anointing oil. Likewise, in Saint John’s vision of heavenly worship (Revelation 4) there are precious stones, gold, thrones, crowns, white robes, crystal and incense. From the beginning to the end of Scripture, worship is offered with as much beauty as possible. While a new mission’s finances may call worship seeking to pour out at the feet of Christ all the precious ointment we possess.

A common misconception is that awe-filled, beautiful worship must be rigid, formal, and cold. Orthodox worship shatters that stereotype. The liturgy is not a performance, but an opportunity to come together as a family of faith before our beloved Father. True Orthodox worship is comfortable, warm, and joyful.  It could be nothing less in His heavenly presence.

ORTHODOX VALUES

Values that are usually termed “Judeo-Christian” have never left Orthodoxy. We believe that sexual expression is a treasured gift, one to be exercised only within marriage. Marriage is a commitment for life. Divorce is a very grave action, and remarriage after divorce a concession to human weakness, undertaken with repentance.

Orthodoxy has stood against abortion since the earliest days of the church. The Didache (circa A.D. 110) states: “Do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant”. In the midst of a culture which freely practiced abortion, infanticide, and the exposure of infants, early Christians were a consistent voice against violence, as the Orthodox Church continues to be today.

Caring for the poor and disadvantaged has always been a concern for the Orthodox. The strong sermons of Saint John Chrysostom, written in the fourt century, bear witness to the importance of this Christian responsibility. The Church continues to see its mission in light of the whole person, body and soul.

Orthodox believers are right, left and center on many issues. But where Scripture and the witness of the early Church guide us, there is no controversy.

( The Orthodox statement of Faith )

I belive in one God, the Father almighty,
   maker of heaven and earth,
   and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
   the only begotten, begotten of the Father
   before all ages, light of light, true God of true God,
   begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father,
   through whom all things were made;
   who for us men and for our salvation came down
   from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit
   and the Virgin Mary, and became man;
   and He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate,
   and suffered and was buried,
   and the third day He rose again, according to the
   Scriptures, and ascended into heaven,
   and sits on the right hand of the Father,
   and He shall come again with glory
   to judge the living and the dead,
   whose kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,
   who proceeds from the Father;
   who with the Father and the Son together
   is worshiped and glorified,
   who spoke through the prophets.
And in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come.

Today, our Holy Orthodox Church is remembering one of Christ’s 12 Apostles, SV. TOMA - ST. THOMAS ! His full name was, Didemus Judas Thomas, who lived in Galilee when it was part of the ancient Roman Empire, and became one of Jesus Christ’s disciples when Jesus called him to join his ministry work.

The soldier smaller than a gun

This is a story about the youngest soldier in the World War I and I am very proud to tell you this story as this brave soldier is from Serbia, my country of origin. His name is Momcilo Gavric and he was born on 1of May 1906 in Loznica, Serbia, as the eighth child from eleven. In the beginning of August 1914 Austro-Hungarian killed his mother, father and all his siblings. He survived as he was not at home when this happened. Left without family and home, Momcilo went to find the 6th Artillery Division of the Serbian Army which was near Gucevo. The Major of the Division accepted Momcilo after hearing what happened to him and to his family.

Srpski Dan 2014.

Srpski Dan was once again held on the 14th June in Leicester and organised by the youth section of the Pokret Srpskih Četnika Ravne Gore. The day was opened by a blessing from Proto Radmilo Stokić, giving his best wishes to the football players and others attending ahead of the 5 a-side football tournament. There were 13 teams which took part in the tournament from different parts of England, including teams from Leicester itself, London, Oxford, Birmingham, Corby, Bedford, Leeds, Wakefield and Halifax.

Easter

If you go to any cemetery you will find a lot of graves and on all monuments you can read; “Here lies ….. Born on ….. Died on ….” But there is one grave, and the only in the all the world, that is different. It is the tomb of Christ. It has no remains, it lies empty. There is no monument on the grave. If there was, the monument would have these words: HE IS NOT HERE, HE IS RISEN

With regard to the recent misunderstandings and problems in the named parish and with the aim to overcome them, I give blessing to the responsible parish priest, protopresbyter -stavrophor Fr. Radmilo Stokić and the newly elected parish board and approved by the Diocese Executive Board, to find a new place for worship in Derby because the church in Derby has been locked by a few of the former members of the previously dissolved parish board. If a resolution can not be found with the locked church in Leicester, act similarly. With this letter we call and ask all pious parishioners to understand this and act on this letter.

Orthodoxy and Roman Catolicism

Our Church is the Apostolic Church, which means that it was founded by Jesus Christ and organized by the Holy Apostles. The teaching of Jesus Christ and His Holy Apostles has been faithfully preserved in our Church by the Holy Tradition. During the first few centuries, within the Church five Patriarchates were established with the sees in the following cities: Antioch (in Syria), Jerusalem, Alexandria (in Egypt), Rome and Constantinople. These five Patriarchates were united into One Church until the middle of the 11th century. In 1054, a split occurred between the four Eastern Patriarchates and the Roman (Western) Patriarchate.

Dušan Balić

Dušan Balić was born on 15th November, 1925 in Riđane, in Serbian Krajina, to parents Andrija and Simeona. At the tender age of 15 he took up arms with his fellow Chetniks to fight for freedom and democracy, beliefs he held all his life. Escaping capture by the Germans and surviving the battle of Padjene he, along with many of his brothers in arms, found a new life in Britain.

It is a day when we take a long and deep look at our Orthodox Faith, the ancient Faith of our fathers. It is obvious to all that we live in a day of tremendous change. Life today is vastly different from what it was fifty years ago. But in all this world of change, there is one thing that has never changed. The beliefs of the Orthodox Church have not changed.

A Timeline of Church History

Scholars estimate there are over 2,600 groups today who lay claims to being the Church, or at least the direct descendants of the Church described in the New Testament Repeat: 2,600 ! But for the first thousand years of her history, the Church was essentially ONE! Five historic Patriarchal centers: Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome, Alexandria and Constantinople, formed a cohesive whole and were in full communion with one another. There were occasional heretical or schismatic groups going their own way, to be sure, but the Church was unifed until the 11th century.
